John Denham's Tackling Race Inequality: A Statement on Race
Racial disadvantage is alive and thriving, and to marginalise an already mythical debate on race with a complacent message about a society now "comfortable with diversity" will result in further scapegoating of black and minority ethnic communities , argues Herman Ouseley in the Guardian on 15 January 2010, in response to John Denham's "target class, not race" speech.
Alan Travis argues in the Guardian (15 January 2010) that John Denham may argue that he wants to take action on both fronts – tackling class inequalities without losing any momentum in the drive against racism. But there is always the danger that such a "sophisticated" message ends up falling between two stools and reassures neither the poorest of the white working class nor inner-city black and Asian "core" Labour voters.
